HiTechnic Sensors

A person can do a lot with the sensors that come in the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT Base Set. You've got the light sensor, the touch sensor, the sound sensor, and even the ultrasonic sensor. But, what if you want to do more? What if you want you robot to be able to sense magnetic north, or to react differently to various colors? HiTechnic, in partnership with LEGO Education, has developed sensors to solve these problems, and they're working on more to solve programming challenges you haven't even thought of yet. Their compass sensor is available through our store, and we'll have the color sensor soon.  Watch this space, though  - as soon as more HiTechnic sensors are available, we'll let you know!

NXT Mobile Application

ATTENTION: The following post includes information that is no longer valid. The Mobile Application process was initiated but soon became too challenging to continue without passing the mounting costs onto customers and therfore was discontinued. We apologize for any frustration this may cause.

Lots of people wondered about the possibility of using the Bluetooth functionality of their cell phones and other mobile devices to control their NXT robots. Until now though, those people would have had to been very technically inclined, as there was no easy way to do this. This is all changed with the introduction of the LEGO NXT Mobile Application.  Now you can control your robot from afar! Supported devices:

  • Nokia
    • 6680, 3230
  • Sony Ericson
    • W800i, W550i, K610i, K800i, K750i, Z710i, Z550i, K510i
  • BenQ-Siemens
    • CX75, X75

Building Guides for NXT Models

You might have noticed the new NXT Models section in the navigation section just below our header.  Currently, the building guides for both the Education models and the Retail models are available there. We'd love to add more models to the page, however.  If you've got a model you think others would be interested in, we'd love to hear about it.  Photos or drawings showing step-by-step building instructions make it even better, but feel free to share even if you don't have those things.  Send any models or links to NXT@LEGOeducation.com, or leave a link in the comments.

NXT Development Kits

LEGO has released developer kits for the NXT software and hardware. These aren't intended for casual users, however - they were created with the advanced NXT user in mind. Interested users can download the Software Developer Kit, the Hardware Developer Kit, and even a Bluetooth Developer Kit. Additional information and the downloadable files are available on the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT'reme page.

NXT Light Sensor Correction

In previous posts, we said that the NXT light sensor would be fully compatible with the RCX brick.  Unfortunately, we were wrong about that. Since the NXT light sensor was designed with the NXT software in mind, it doesn't have full functionality when used with ROBOLAB 2.9, a converter cable and the RCX.

NXT Display Navigation

One of the neatest new features of the NXT brick is its large LCD screen.  Using the display to navigate the NXT's controls is one way you have more control over the brick.

There are six main menus within the NXT navigation: My Files, NXT Program, View, Bluetooth, Settings, and Try Me.  Each of these has additional sub-menus that let you control or view various settings.

We've created a basic NXT Navigation Map that shows all the menus and sub-menus within the NXT navigation - take a look!  It'll come in handy once you get your hands on a new set, since you'll already be familiar with the new interface.
